There are powerful teaching resources in this department, which includes a group of young and energetic teachers with higher academic level and academic influence. Now there are 39 professional teachers, among whom 11 are professors, 10 are associate professors, 1 winner of National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 New Century Excellent Talents in University of Ministry of Education. At the same time, this department has engaged some academicians and famous experts of related subjects as part-time professors.
In terms of cultivating talents, our department has always emphasized on the close connection between theory and practice, developed the teaching and learning pattern which involves classroom teaching, experiments and field practice, and cultivated a great number of specialized personnel, who are greatly embraced by the society. 2. Targets of Cultivation
For the principle that “Education should face modernization, face the world, and face the future”, a teaching plan for “Junior College Graduates to Undergraduate Diploma” program for the major of resources environment and urban-rural area planning and management in the Institute of Distance Education of Nanjing University is specifically made in order to cultivate the professional talents who are occupational, high-level and applied. The major focuses on training students in the basic knowledge, basic theory, and basic skills of resources environment and urban-rural area planning and management, especially land resources and real estate exploration and management. Its graduates can do relative administrative work, technical work, teaching or research in land resources, urban and rural construction, planning and management, real estate exploration and operation, universities and research institutes.
3. Subjects and Scales of Cultivation
To closely adapt to the cause development of resources environment and urban-rural area planning and management, especially to meet the social needs of cultivating talents in land resources and real estate exploration and management, the major cultivates the compound applied talents with broad range of knowledge, highly comprehensive ability and distinguished skill in both science and technology.
First, for broad range of knowledge and expanded basic knowledge, basic courses are organized at the requirement of comprehensive university and discipline group.
Second, applied courses for practice emphasizes on developing students’ ability in applied research, exploration, design and innovation.
Third, the teaching mechanism taking production, learning and research as a whole is established. The cultivation target of this major is that our graduates should have the theoretical knowledge in resources environment and urban-rural area planning and management, professional skills at the comprehensive management of resources environment and urban planning, relative knowledge in resources environment and urban planning, various knowledge and abilities in science, arts and technology, be capable of undertaking resources environment management, urban planning and urban problem research, have both comprehensive management ability and skill-applied ability in resources environment and urban-rural area planning, and greatly meet the demands of the comprehensive management of resources environment and uniform planning of urban and rural area in the developing process of current urban-rural integration of our country. As a result, this major is characteristic of great comprehensiveness, adaptability and skill, meeting the objective needs of economical and social development.
4. Length of Schooling
This major adopts a credit system in the teaching management. The regular length of schooling is three years and the flexible length of schooling can be from two to five years.
5. Syllabus Design
The syllabus includes basic course, courses of the major, optional courses, and graduation thesis.
There are 4 common basic courses including Theories of Deng Xiaoping, Basis of Computer, College English and College Chinese. The total credits for these courses are 20.
There are 11 courses of the major including Outline to Geography, Economics of Resources, Outline to Urban and Regional Planning, Land Resources Management, Introduction to Resource Science, Introduction to Environmental Science, Land Utility and Planning, Real Estate Evaluation and Real Estate Exploration and Management. The total credits for these courses are 44.
Optional courses consist of 2 optional courses of the major and 5 common optional courses. Optional courses of the major are Study of Land Evaluation and Economics of Real Estate. Common optional courses include Business Spoken English, Western Culture, Document Writing, An Introduction to World Economy, and Economic Law. The total credits for the optional courses are 28 and students are required to get at least 8 of them, among which at least 4 should be of optional courses of the major.
The credits for graduation thesis are 8.
6. Teaching Process
The teaching of this major is mainly through online education. The process of teaching includes online teaching, online learning guidance, homework, online discussion, assessment, and graduation thesis.
a. Online teaching
The teaching of this major is mainly through online teaching and teachers who have good ideological quality, a strong sense of responsibility and rich teaching experience are chosen to give lessons. For each course, some teachers will form a teaching group to design the syllabus, choose teaching materials and produce multi-media teaching courseware.
b. Online learning guidance
According to the arrangement of teaching schedule, the teaching group answer students’ questions online, settle the problems students encounter in their study, strengthen the communication between the teachers and the students so as to improve the effect of teaching and learning. And they modify the teaching speed and content corresponding to students’ timely response.
c. Homework
Homework is an important means to push students to learn by themselves, digest and consolidate what they learn. All courses of this major have homework. Teachers assign sufficient homework at each teaching stage and give feedback to students in time. The grades of homework account for a certain proportion of the final score.
Homework emphasizes on case analysis and deep-thinking of problems so as to cultivate students’ ability to apply the theory and knowledge of the major and solve practical problems.
d. Online discussion
Online discussion is an important part and method of online teaching. By asking specific questions, teachers require students to discuss and communicate sufficiently within the time limit.
e. Assessment
Assessment includes homework, quizzes, online discussion and final examination.
e. Graduation thesis
After the study of all courses, based on their practice, students choose a topic and discuss with their supervisors. Under the instruction of their supervisors, students finish their graduation thesis independently. Graduation thesis is a comprehensive reflection and evaluation of students’ studying achievements. Those who cannot pass the graduation thesis cannot be conferred degrees.
f. Conferring Degree
Students can apply for the degree if they can finish the required courses and get the grades better than “all-right” for these courses and the graduation thesis (including “all-right”) within the time limit of flex-learning system.
