  Teaching Plan for “Junior College Graduates to Undergraduate Diploma” Program for the major of Business English in the Institute of Distance Education of Nanjing University

1.      Introduction

School of Foreign Studies (SFS) at Nanjing University originated from the English Section established by Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1917. In the 100-year history of Nanjing University, SFS has undergone different phases, in which more than 5,800 bachelors, masters and doctors have ever studied here.

SFS has six subjects for bachelors---English, French, Russian, German, Japanese and Spanish, which have covered the mother languages of the current major developed countries in the world. They are in great demand in the society and have good prosperity in development. At present, SFS has one national key discipline (English Language and Literature), one provincial key discipline (French Language and Literature), three PhD programs (English, French and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics), and seven MA programs. In 2002, of its 117 staff, 10 were PhD supervisors, 48 were professors and associate professors, 17 had doctor’s degree, and most had studied abroad. In the academic year of 2001-2002, there were 1,004 full-time students, among whom 35 were PH.D students, 181 MA students, and 788 undergraduates.

SFS not only thinks highly of teaching and sets strict demands on it, but has rigorous style of study and advanced facilities. Its teachers conduct scientific research to support teaching; actively carry out teaching reforms; well-organize the curriculum structure; widely adopt such modern teaching methods as multimedia and internet and continually improve teaching quality. SFS takes advantage of the complete disciplines of a comprehensive university and employ various models to cultivate students to have solid foreign language skills, reasonable knowledge structure and comprehensive qualities. In the national foreign language proficiency tests and various foreign language competitions at home and abroad, the students of SFS have achieved outstanding rewards.

2. Targets of Cultivation

Our target is to cultivate the students who should develop in an all-round way---morally, intellectually, and physically, and have comparatively strong English listening, reading, speaking, writing and translating abilities and a certain knowledge about international commercial affairs. By learning the genuine language materials concerning commercial activities, students should be familiar with and grasp contemporary commercial faiths and international commercial conventions, enhance the basic qualities as commercial operators, have strong commercially intercommunicating capability and persistently creative sense, and learn the society and business cultures of English-speaking countries. After graduation, students can engage in management, international trade and marketing, etc., which are related to foreign affairs, in the fields like business and foreign trade; and they can adroitly apply English into business activities.

3. Subjects and Scales of Cultivation

Our cultivating subjects are the students whose proficiency level should correspond to that of junior college graduates. Through the study of this course, students should master the communicating skills of commercial English, reach the level of the graduates majored in English and become the applied commercial operators in foreign businesses.

Cultivating directions: adroitly master the basic knowledge of this subject and all-round skills in English listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating; have a wide range of knowledge and a certain subject-related knowledge; have relatively strong bilingual application ability and elementary knowledge and skills in international commerce; have healthy body and good comprehensive quality; reach the cultivating target by passing course studies, dissertation and independent research and practical activities.

4. Length of Schooling

This major adopts a credit system in the teaching management. The regular length of schooling is three years and the flexible length of schooling can be from two to five years.

5. Syllabus Design

The syllabus includes basic course, courses of the major, optional courses, and graduation thesis.

There are 4 common basic courses including Theories of Deng Xiaoping, basis of computer, Western Culture and College Chinese. The total credits for these courses are 16.

There are 11 courses of the major including Commercial English, Advanced Commercial English, English Reading, English Listening, Business Spoken English, English Grammar, Practical English Writing, English Translation, Micro-economics, Management, and International Trade. The total credits for these courses are 46.

Optional courses consist of optional courses of the major and common optional courses, among which the former are Reading Selections of English Culture, British Literature and An Introduction to Business; and the latter are Writing of Official Documents, An Introduction to World Economy, Law of Economy, and Design and Creation of Webpage. The total credits for the optional courses are 28 and students are required to get at least 12 of them, among which at least 8 should be of optional courses of the major.

The credits for graduation thesis are 8.

6. Teaching Process

The teaching of this major is mainly through online education. The process of teaching includes online teaching, online learning guidance, homework, online discussion, assessment, and graduation thesis.

a.       Online teaching

The teaching of this major is mainly through online teaching and teachers who have good ideological quality, a strong sense of responsibility and rich teaching experience are chosen to give lessons. For each course, some teachers will form a teaching group to design the syllabus, choose teaching materials and produce multi-media teaching courseware.

b. Online learning guidance

According to the arrangement of teaching schedule, the teaching group answer students’ questions online, settle the problems students encounter in their study, strengthen the communication between the teachers and the students so as to improve the effect of teaching and learning. And they modify the teaching speed and content corresponding to students’ timely response.

c.       Homework

Homework is an important means to push students to learn by themselves, digest and consolidate what they learn. All courses of this major have homework. Teachers assign sufficient homework at each teaching stage and give feedback to students in time. The grades of homework account for a certain proportion of the final score.

d.       Online discussion

Online discussion is an important part and method of online teaching. By asking specific questions, teachers require students to discuss and communicate sufficiently within the time limit.

e. Assessment

Assessment includes homework, quizzes, online discussion and final examination.

e.       Graduation thesis

After the study of all courses, based on their practice, students choose a topic and discuss with their supervisors. Under the instruction of their supervisors, students finish their graduation thesis independently. Graduation thesis is a comprehensive reflection and evaluation of students’ studying achievements. Those who cannot pass the graduation thesis cannot be conferred degrees.

f. Conferring Degree

Students can apply for the degree if they can finish the required courses and get the grades better than “all-right” for these courses and the graduation thesis (including “all-right”) within the time limit of flex-learning system. Nanjing University will confer the degree of Bachelor of Arts to those who meet the requirement of “The Detailed Rules to Confer Bachelor Degrees to Students of Distance Education”.
